30% more Ops / Cycle = 20% IPC Benefit over Piledriver

Assuming 45% increase in performance vs Bulldozer (First Gen) and a 32% increase in performance vs Piledriver (Second Gen). This is taken directly from AMD!

IPC will lie somewhere between Nahelem and Sandy Bridge , falling behind Haswell by only 25-30%.

Due to the 20% difference in single core performance when compared to Haswell, the FX 9650 will perform on par with a 2nd gen intel i7 2600k in gaming, still falling behind the 4770k by a hair when paired with two high end graphics card solutions. For games, like Crysis 3, that take advantage of more than 4 cores, the FX 9650 will perform on par with its intel counter parts. The 32 % performance increase comes with a 20% increase in IPC (vs Piledriver) and around a 10% Clock boost.

The only downside with these chips is the overclockability. AMD generally pushes their stock clocks high enough to not leave any room for overclocking. Although AMD has put alot of effort into making these chips less power hungry, they only succeeded in allowing for higher clocks and typically higher overclock under the given TDP. The total power consumption is only 5-8% less than its FX 8350 counterpart. Unlike with the 4770k, which can handle a hefty +43% overclock from 3.5 Ghz to 5.0 Ghz , while the AMD FX 9650 will only handle a 20% overclock from 4.5 Ghz to 5.4 Ghz.

Note: It should deffinitly be noted that the intel processor overclocked to 5 Ghz will still use a whopping 40% less power than AMD's Steamroller Flagship.

The FX 9650 will lie somewhere between the 4770k and the 4960x in performance, and the price will reflect that. To directly compete with the 4770k, AMD will release a cheaper variant clocked at 3.8 Ghz with a 4.2 Ghz Turbo.

My Price estimate for AMD's flagship FX chip 4.5 Ghz with 4.8 Ghz Turbo is $449, with the lower model sporting a 3.8 Ghz / 4.2 Ghz Turbo Clock for $249. The FX 9650 will compete directly with the i7 4930k, while the FX 9450 will compete with the i7 4770k.

You Choose Who will be King!

Update: *Given AMD's flagship Kaveri APU will sport 3M/6T , (source) it wll be interesting to see if AMD releases a 6M/12T Centurian FX variant flagship in the 900-1000 USD range. (If not  4M/8T) Although this chip will be plagued with terrible overclockability, it will nevertheless give the 4960x a run for its money.

    1. 4770k only has a 5% increase over 3770k, and 15% over 2500k, a 20% increase is way better than intel over the last 2 generations.

      Delete
    2. So what it is a better Increase it still won't match Intel in IPC or efficiency. AMD's GOT nothing on INTEL!!!!! Performance per watt is important to me as well and AMD does have that do they?

      Delete
    3. No one is doomed. AMD sells a ton of product due to their price to performance ratio. They have also bagged both of the next-gen consoles. In addiction to that they have some of the best discrete solutions at this time. Not everything needs to be looked at from an enthusiast point of view.

      Delete
    4. AMD did indeed bag both new-gen consoles however the Xbox one will tank because its just not that good and it will be priced higher than PS4 which will be much more powerful. No you're right but AMD needs to step their up game.

    5. All amd have done here is made there fx 8350 in a power house of a cpu, the FX 9650 single cores are around the same power as the 2600k cores except there will be 8 of them. Amd are being rather sneaky they know that games don't take much cpu power, On games the fx 6100 can tie with the 3570k with the same parts, as games don't rely on the cpu so why would amd need the make there cpu more powerful than a 2600k running 8 cores when no games are going to even get close to using that power, the competition inst based of gaming power (single cores) amd will close the gap when it comes to rendering, this is what matters to people getting things finished fast rendering times, applications will use them cores and boy FX 9650 will shine everyone is underestimating its power and what its use will be mainly aimed at.

    6. Are you on drugs from another UNI-verse what are you smoking? The FX-8350 SUCKS ASS!!!!!!! Intel's Almighty i5-3570K crushes EVERYTHING And ANYTHING AMD HAS TO DUST and Intel uses power to do it as well. The FX 9650 won't be ANYTHING special so AMD IS DUST!!!! Steamroller is just a small revision and that means AMD messed up and they are DONE FOR!!!!

  3. AMD does not what? make sense.. how can i explain a 1.1 Ghz overck? what exactly is your question

  4. You are using an article from August of 2012 to Fabricate these results?! Are you insane?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Not only the article, the jump from bulldozer to piledriver was about 10 - 15 percent, and it has been implied through numerous graphs released directly from amd and elswhere that the jump to steamroller from piledriver is roughly double the jump from bulldozer to piledriver, and excavator double the jump from piledriver to steamroller. Remembering steamroller has 30 percent higher ops per cycle vs piledriver, this is directly from amd. My guess is this translates to a 20 percent boost in performance per clock, with a 10 percent clock boost combined to be roughly 32 percent better than piledriver.

    1. But its still NOT GOOD ENOUGH NOT TO TOPPLE the ALMIGHTY INTEL HASWELL!!!!!! Worse of all is that AMD hasn't made ANY effort to reduce power usage so INTEL WINS AGAIN because it uses half the power. INTEL wins and AMD IS FINISHED!!!! FACE IT AMD IS COOKED and they can't do a thing about it.

    2. You are a phony. You just came up with performance per watt. Last year it was IPC with you. You are just a fan boy admit it.

    3. Actually its both you phony. Both IPC and performance per watt are important to me and AMD has neither which why you are so mad.

    1. Excavator won't hurt Intel where it hurts because they will have broadwell by then and IT WILL CREAM BOTH Steamroller and Excavator INTO DUST where it counts the most power consumption.

  7. AMD bumps :

Bulldozer ->10% IPC boost, 15% total performance boost -> Piledriver
Piledriver ->20%IPC boost, 32% total performance boost-> Steamroller
Steamroller ->30% IPC boost, 50% total performance --> Excavator

    Intel bumps :

    Nahelem -- > 20% IPC , 30% total performance --> Sandy Bridge
Sandy Bridge --> 7% IPC, 10% total performance --> Ivy Bridge
Ivy Bridge --> 10% IPC, 10% total performance --> Haswell

Intel slowing down with their old arch and their tick tock boosts, AMD will exponentially grow the newer bulldozer's arch into a beast.

    ReplyDelete

    1. And Intel still Wins because of MUCH lower power consumption people care about that these days. Yes Intel is slowing down but AMD can't catch up so it doesn't matter that much right now.

    2. Good for you. IM looking for something AFFORDABLE and RELIABLE that doesn't COST SO MUCH!!!!!! Intel doesn't have that!!!!!! PRICE:PERFORMANCE IS where it is AT and INTEL SUCKS in this aspect AND ALWAYS WILL. They had better JUST GIVE UP, STUPID INTEL, because they are so far behind with that, not to mention their iGPUS...

BUT IN THE END, WE NEED BOTH YOU IDIOT. IF EITHER COMPANY BECAME A MONOPOLY, WE WOULD ALL BE F*CKED. I LIKE AMD, YOU LIKE INTEL, but WE BOTH NEED BOTH. SIMPLE.

      Delete
    3. I really hate to break this to you but Intel is just as cheap as AMD in the $200-$300 range and Intel is much faster as well all the while using less power. Buying an FX chip is pointless because I would need a new motherboard anyway and I heard AMD motherboards are antiquated and have lots of bugs. The FX-8350 costs $200 While Intel costs a little bit more at $230 but Intel is faster and use FAR LESS POWER. Intel doesn't suck at Price:performance besides I don't think you use 8 threads so AMD IS USELESS just buy Intel for beter all-round performance and lower power usage. No we don't need AMD anymore ARM fills that role now. AMD has one foot in the grave and ARM is the reason Haswell was created NOT AMD!!!!

      Delete
  10. Intel is going to steamroll AMD INTO the GROUND with Haswell and Broadwell. Both Intel chips will be far better in power consumption and performance per watt.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Haswell isa joke in terms of CPU performance, still only a minuscule jump. Intel is focusing on integrated GPU more than CPU performance. They have ALOT more catching up to do than AMD in this aspect. But expect Haswel iGPU HD 5200 GT3 to match if not BEAT AMD's Richland. Kaveri, on the other hand, based on GCN cores, will pass 1 teraflop of GPU power, putting them back into a healthy lead once again by Q4. By this time steamroller will be out. AMD has only been closing the gap since bulldozer.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah they do but so what Intel has MUCH better performance per watt and better power consumption. With GDDR5 Kaveri will be well beyond the 1 teraflop mark for its GPU. Bulldozer SUCKS ASS and Everything Intel has BEATS TO A PULP!! Kaveri will be better than Steamroller but Intel is king of IPC and LOW power consumption AMD HAS NOTHING ON THAT!!!!!

  12. Intel is MUCH worse power consumption in laptops with good graphics than AMD. Laptops are where power consumption is important, not desktops... You are missing the whole point

    ReplyDelete

    1. Wrong to me Power consumption is VERY important but a gamers like you don't understand that. What is the point that I am missing? That AMD still won't be competitive and will be wiped off the map.

Would it make your beloved intel chips cheaper?

      Fucking idiot...

  13. Given their price to performance (which is MUCH more significant to gamers than performance/watt) AMD will not kick the dust any time soon... and thats a fact.

The fact is, Steamroller FX will now compete directly with the i7, as opposed to Piledriver and Bulldozer which only competed directly with the i5.

    2. Ahahah...An Intel fanboi heh? YOu're an AMD fanboi so you're far worse than me!!!!! Oh AMD will charge a premium and then Intel will capitalize on that and lower their prices and bring out better CPU's AND CRUSH AMD TO THE GROUND!!!!!!

  15. The proof is in the pudding sometime later this year. But if we were to assume this is all true, through an undervolt and disabling 1/4 modules in the BIOS, FX-9650 would best Intel's entire i5 lineup while consuming roughly the same power. Or just buy six-core model from the start.

OCing the i5 would bring them to equal terms, or the i5 would pull ahead a bit on single-thread and lightly threaded apps which isn't new news.

Considering that AMD has had excellent bang for the buck for their more recent CPUs (check the CPUBenchmark.com charts) I'd imagine the price would be closer to a Haswell i5 while offering higher performance in threaded apps with much closer performance on single threaded.

jml12 forgets that while Intel has higher performance right now, the prices reflect that. btw, never seen a kid with so little to do with their life but to reply to every comment with the same common knowledge we all already have.

Maybe you should step back for a minute and wonder what exactly Intel does with its $120 Billion market cap, then read up on why Intel became so much more popular than AMD. When AMD's Athlon 64 was released and they started gaining traction, Intel started bribing PC makers to build with their chips because the Pentium 4 simply couldn't compete. That was way back in 2005 -- Google it. You'll find more reports of history repeating itself between 2008 and 2009.

Nobody can argue that Intel makes excellent CPUs. However Intel as a company has been far from honest with its only competitor, AMD, and if AMD does start succeeding it is advantageous for everyone because Intel's prices will start falling. Thanks for the read.

    1. Single Threaded Performance is key and AMD doesn't HAVE THAT!!! I somehow doubt that AMD fanboi. AMD fanbois have ZERO knowledge of anything else other than LOVING AMD BLINDLY like YOU DO MATT!!!! Intel has a new CEO by the way and they are going to get more aggressive in the mobile market and AMD is going to fell it BIG TIME!!!!! Intel has changed AMD HAS NOT and thus AMD IS FINISHED!!!!! AMD Althon 64 at the time was a wonderful CPU and I would like nothing more than AMD to relive those days where they beat Intel in power consumption and performance but I don't think that's ever going to happen WITH RORY READ as CEO!!!! AMD's Board choose Rory Read because he doesn't ask too many questions and he's great at marketing which AMD DOESN'T NEED right now. They need more tech people to fix their LACKLUSTER CPU's and APU's.

      Delete
    2. Single threaded performance is NOT key it is secondary, for 2 reasons. First more and more games and software in general is multi-threraded. Second as long as AMD maintains its core advantage and makes MODERATE strides in improving IPC, then it will close the gap with Intel and close the gap in market share with its modest pricing.

      Delete
    3. Ahahah...Wrong IPC is why one of two reasons why AMD is getting its butt handed to it on a sliver platter by Intel. The Second is Process Node advantage. Moderate Strides is NOT good enough. I somehow doubt AMD will price these CPU's well.

      Delete
    4. So, you say you would like nothing more than for AMD to relive its Athlon 64 days, yet turn a blind eye to the fact that Intel paid off system builders to keep AMD from making the profit they needed to innovate. First in 2005 with Athlon 64, then again in 2008/2009 at the dawn of Athlon/Phenom II, both very capable CPUs in their day.

The end result is that today AMD's CPUs and APUs are "Lackluster" (mostly due to a lack of funding), and you're cheering on the people who made that happen.

Now, I build plenty of systems with SB and IB processors; even the i3-2100 is impressive for gaming when it comes to gaming due to the efficient architecture, beating out the Phenom II x4 more often than not, using only 30W of power with an undervolt. i5/i7 is even better yet when I can snag them used on ebay.

Really, AMD is really just in an unfortunate situation right now. I don't think their current CPUs are anything special at all. I came to this page hoping I might find some good news, which would mean good news for both Intel and AMD fans for different reasons, but nothing yet. I'll keep checking search engines hopeful that we can get some competition again.

      Delete
    5. Not the Intel Bribing part I hated that too. No I am not you misread what I said. AMD is in a really bad situation that I agree and Kaveri is AMD's last hope. Relying on M$ Windows 8 however is a really bad idea for AMD!!! Something we both agree on AMD's Current CPU's are nothing special at all. I check all of time on both sides.

  16. Single Threaded Performance of Steamroller will be higher than sandy bridge, but lower than haswell. In games that use 8 threads, intell will fall quite behind (stuck with 4 cores and hyperthreading which isnt usefull in games). Most next gen games will be designed to use 8 cores(DUH xbox one / PS4 / etc..... )

    1. An AMD CPU with decent IPC this I'd Like to see however Intel still WINS because it has lower power consumption. The Price wars ARE OVER now its who ever can get there CPU's/APU's to ARM power usage levels WINS PERIOD!!!! With Haswell Intel is a made a big step towards that goal while AMD has gotten a little bit better they are not going to get there for another 3 years. Intel will be there with Broadwell and then AMD won't stand a chance.

  17. IF an AMD CPU performs 40% better than an equally priced Intel CPU on average, but uses 40% more power, people will obviously choose the performance over the power unless they want to save under 20 dollars a year on a powerbill.

    1. Only Idiots like you would choose performance over lower power consumption. 99.99% of people choose a 4960x over a 4770k if they were the same price.. Is this strange? No not at all.. hence why the 3970x is 1000 USD and the 4770 is 300.. power usage is a side factor mostly only for overclockability...Like I said, power usage is significantly more important with mobile solutions (not even close)

Performance matters more than power usage in desktop solutions.. this isnt a new idea...

  21. Geez, I hope this is right.
not just because I have an AM3+ motherboard, but because if AMD are ground to dust (as jml12 either apparently wants or believes will happen) then intel will have nothing stopping them from charging people a premium for their CPUs. as of now, AMD is keeping i3 and i5 prices down, along with some i7s, and if they are lost, then be prepared for $500 i3s or something like that.

Where is your performance/Watt then? The money paid for your CPU will outweigh any savings for power costs.

If AMD gets kicked off, everyone loses.

  22. If you look around the internet, which I have recently been doing, there seem to be a lot of people bashing PD and BD, even though on most of the sites where this happens (guru3d, anandtech, etc.) the people bashing have not owned a PD or BD.

Funnily enough, I have a i7 3770k system remarkably similar to my FX-8350 system on hand, with one of my roommates having it. we regularly use each other's computers, and to be honest, there is little to no difference in any performance.

Sometimes His will beat mine in a game or benchmark, and vice versa, but really there is no reason to bash on PD or BD, and certainly not Steamroller, which hasn't been released.

hjh: I'm not sure that steamroller will remain at $449 for long, and I really hope it won't because I want one..... even so, with AMD I could probably buy a 9620 and get lucky...

Finally, if anyone wants to bash them because every benchmark shows them at a higher frequency than their intel counterparts, there are a few reasons for this.

    1. an 8350 has stock of 4.0 Ghz (already higher than any Intel)

    2. Despite the apparently massive power consumption (therefore heat production) I can manage a 5Ghz with a H60 and a 4.6 with air.

    3. Bulldozer/Piledriver silicon was built for high clocks. Don't be surprised to see steamrollers easily break 5Ghz

    1. Crapdozer and Shitdriver use too much power for my tastes. AMD Kaveri might change my mind but we will have to wait until pre-release benchmarks come out. Right now Intel is superior in all areas THAT'S FACT!!!! The 8350's is MUCH LOWER than Intel's Core I series. Yeah you can but it uses twice the power of Intel's Core I5 IB!!!! You're right on the last part however AMD's IPC is UTTERLY LACKING!!!!

      Delete
    2. Not utterly, as you claim. Besides, if we compare price equivalents, the FX-8350 averages ahead, whereas comparisons to i7 and high i5s is comparing $200 with $250 or higher, and with the motherboard cost it's more like $350 against $450 - $500. Frankly, for what I do (rendering in blender) the FX-8350 is faster for less money than the aforementioned 3770k.

      Delete
    3. I see your trying to make look better. Motherboards don't cost that much you can get a good one for about $80 and the Core i5's cost $220 so it $300 not $350 and up. Wrong the Core i5/i7 is faster and uses less power while doing so in fact it uses half the power and creates less heat and noise MR. POWER HOG!!!!!

      Delete
    4. Not so. My FX-8350 can render faster than a 3770K, and the amount saved on price outweighs the amount lost on power.

      Delete
    5. Are you sure about that? In every task that matters INTEL WINS AMD LOSES BADLY!!!! Gaming, emulation, and power usage!!!! MOAR CORES are NOT better like you seem to think Better IPC IS KING and AMD's IPC is pitiful AT BEST!!!

      Delete
    6. Yep. Just did the exact same render on both computers. Both at stock, I still won by a [sarc]massive[/sarc] 13 seconds over around 1 and a quarter hours.

      O.O

OC tests will probably make his pull ahead, but for $195 the FX-8350 was a good catch. (where he paid $350 for his 3770k)
In single threaded things, however, his CPU is generally around 1.3 times faster.

If intel had something cheaper that did what I want it to faster, then I would buy it. But for what I do, the FX is the best performance/price.

Now, this is directed at you, jml12

Frankly, the term "Gamers" means to everyone else "a crazy freak". whereas to gamers it means a person who is the same as everyone else but also likes games.

All the gamers I know are all people who are just as intelligent and agreeable as everyone else. If your entire perspective of the term gamer is a way to brand people as "bad", then I encourage you to actually take more than a fleeting glance at gamers as a whole.

If you are happy with living under a (sandy or ivy) bridge scaring people into agreement, then so be it. But at least realise that FX isn't as bad as you make it out to be, and that intel might not actually hold every single record in existence.

    7. Ahahah..The 3750K doesn't cost that much you're $30 off. Intel uses less power and AMD is terrible at everything that I DO!!! Emulation, gaming, and web browsing!!! No its a way to label a PC user who uses too much power. SB and IB are the best for emulation and gaming AMD can't even come CLOSE!!!! So even I would be called a gamer I see. I don't like AMD because they suck too much.

  23. I am confident that a 5 Ghz Steamroller FX will perform significantly better when compared to a 5 Ghz 4770k, then an FX 8350 did when compared to a 3770k. AMD is closing the gap. Intel, with its billions of research dollars, still is only managing to pull 5-10% performance each step of the way, choosing to focus more on its IGPU than CPU.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Intel's IGPU is faster than AMD's right now with Intel's Haswell. I somehow don't think so Intel will still be the better performer and Intel is better for Emulation, Power consumption, and gaming. I care about power usage because I want to save on my electric bill, reduce noise and heat from my PC, and finally I want a small PC and you can't have that with AMD's loud power hogging CPU's.

  24. The FX 9450 will overclock just as well as the FX 9650 in most cases (AMD assures 5 Ghz on AIR , 5.4 Ghz on Water for the FX 9650, so im guessing the FX 9450 will be easily manage over 5 Ghz), just has a significantly less stock clock.

      Delete
    4. well if everyone was you then they would agree but that is not the case. For desktop solutions power consumption is a factor but for most it just comes downs to pure performance. I cant speak from an emulation/rendering/digital media standpoint because I do not do that stuff but from a gaming and general use standpoint Intel is not worth the extra bucks period.

      Delete
    5. Wrong Intel is cheaper than AMD in the low end and Intel uses a third of the power. AMD is bad for the low end because their CPU's suck and their GPU are just mediocre.

  26. Then you must be an AMD fanboy too cause AMD slaughters intel in power efficiency for mobile APUs with significantly better graphics performance. Not... This guy blindly loves intel! even if amd surpasses them in power efficiency. Are you sure you truly care about power efficiency?

While you can't get a mini-itx board for AM3+, you can get FM2 mini-itx boards, and considering that your vendetta seems to be against AMD in general...

I mean, personally, I'd kinda prefer my computer running hot, as it is pretty much the main source of heat due to no air con.

jml12, do you own any of the following:

      Toaster
      Microwave
      Hot water system
      hairdryer
      air conditioner

    3. Nope I don't own any of those things why do you ask? Most of the time the Heat from the PC IS A BAD BAD thing. No its both you MORON!!!! Oh wait a minute I do use an air conditioner and I HATE USING IT BECAUSE MY POWER BILL MORE THAN DOUBLES!!!

  29. I am not so sure about that Gerg. I somehow doubt that it uses 12 cores it seems to use 4 cores and AMD's 4 cores are not even enough. Intel's 4 almighty cores are barely enough. Crysis 3 is heavily CPU dependent NOT CORE dependent!!! No I am not because while Haswell is only a mere 5% improvement its still twice the IPC that AMD has at least!!!! AMD is still stuck at slightly above where they were in 2008. Intel on the other hand has been improving like mad!!!!

    2. You have proven over and over that you have absolutely no clue what price to performance means.. I am sure AMD has chosen to do this for the right reasons.. GDDR5 is not as cheap and widely available as you would think, and the performance benefit might be negligible in windows.

      Delete
    3. Wrong AMD has never done anything for the right reasons. They have done everything wrong in the CPU/APU business. The Way AMD is going they are finished!!!! GDDR5 is just for video memory not as a replacement for DDR3. On-board GDDR5 was going to solve AMD's bandwidth problem but now they won't have it Intel Broadwell will EASILY crush AMD INTO THE GROUND!!!! Now Kaveri is going to have a 30% at most upgrade from Kaveri it won't even reach 1 teraflop in GPU power while Broadwell will easily reach 1.5 teraflops.

Tomb Raider with the Tress FX hair didn't bother my system a bit, dropped to the lowest FPS being in the high-30 range.

Don't buy AMD because it sucks down too much power. AMD is finished Nvidia's got 95 percent of Haswell notebooks won. AMD is irreverent at this point and might as well be dead. You probably live in a third world country where power usage is unaffordable for most.

    5. "Get an Intel for faster Gaming."
I might not. I under-clocked my FX-4100 because the characters were moving too fast, so I had to slow it down. Even so, it loads up Windows pretty fast, and I am using an HDD, not SDD.

Weird, they move too fast at 3.6GHz and 3.7GHz, but they are normal at 3.5GHz and 3.8Ghz.

Why would I want a faster processor, regardless of brand or type? My games are locked at 60FPS most of the time and that is with 1080p. I use V-Sync, so no point if I get more frames. I am fine, FX-4100 babay! :)

P.S. I told my landlord about the little extra charge for my wattage due to the processor, he just laughed at that.

    6. Have you read the review on AMD's Kabini APUs?
Man, that is less wattage for the win. Also, they are enough to keep up with me on the usual websites I visit.

    7. The FX-4100 SUCKS ASS and uses FAR MORE power than even the Core i5-3570K!!!! Intel is the clear winner and AMD is the clear loser!!! Really he laughed at that what is he a gamer? Kabini does use less power than Intel Ivy bridge and it offer FAR LESS performance in cpu and GPU!!!! I look at he Max TDP to see where chips lie so that I can compare them equally. AMD Kabini vs Intel haswell ULV both 14 watt and 15 watts in order FIGHT. Intel haswell gets A HUGE victory in CPU, IGP, and lower power consumption Intel is the all around WINNER with AMD left with Nothing to hold on to they are TOAST unless Kaveri really brings something special but so far Kaveri won't bring much to the table other than 20%-30% IPC, 30% IGP performance, and maybe 15% lower power consumption these figures are good but NOT GOOD ENOUGH to compete with Intel Broadwell. I will be looking forward to what Kaveri has in store I can't wait to see what it can do without GDDR5.

      Delete
    8. No, but my computer is usually the only thing I have on majority of the time and the TV as a monitor.
May neighbors have tons of electronics and things that hog up the power in some apartments alone that I am in the mere minimum, so my little extra power hogging over intel processors don't phase him.

Kabini is maminly a compete with Atoms, or so many say. I care less. I love that they eat little wattage, so not power hungry and have performance.

Enthusiast will sacrifice watts and temps for performance. My statement applies to the AMD videocards. After the "Never Settle" bundle, they showed what their drivers were capable of in terms of performance.

On the processor side, I want to see what Kaveri brings forth and I am not holding my breath but I am more of a regular user than gamer. More cores and more GHz the better for me. (I've already explained my situation with the processors in the Windows boot time)

    9. My SB is really slow in normal usage and my Radeon 5570 from AMD SUCKS ass and uses 80 watts for a low end setup that's WAY TOO MUCH!!!AMD Kaveri won't deliver that much for IGP only a 30% now that there is NO GDDR5 and there are memory bandwidth problems galore. The CPU will fare a bit better thought I think its going to be a better than Richland by a good margin.

Most single threaded games only show FX's weakness if you accelerate or load the game far more than it was designed to cope with.

Multithreaded games only show the FX's weakness when... Nope, got nothing.

Why can you not accept that Intel is good, AMD is good, and that you shouldn't be allowed to bash one unless you can create something vastly superior yourself.

      Delete
    2. Shut up you idiot!!! And that's why AMD sucks single threaded loads like games and emulation show FX's BIG weaknesses and AMD falls to Intel. Intel is better at everything than AMD and AMD has LOST!!!!

    3. Why should I shut up? I am simply stating facts derived from personal experience with both systems.

Besides, considering that many things are at least dual threaded, FX doesn't really have a weakness unless you are pushing the system really hard.

      Delete
    4. Yep and I push my systems so AMD doesn't seem to be a good choice!!!! Intel is better at single core programs and that's mostly what I play. Where are the mutil-threaded games? Starcraft 2 is IPC based and uses only 2 cores. In 2 to 4 core gaming Intel has a HUGE lead over AMD!!!!

  34. There's another reason why AMD won't die (sorry if someone already mentioned this, can't abide reading all jml12's replies)...

Both the XBOX One and the PS4 have AMD APU's at there heart. They should be a big money spinner for AMD.

It's important that both AMD and Intel are healthy and playing fair, because that increases competition which increases both the speed of the chips and decreases the price.

I have an Intel CPU and and AMD GPU and am a fanboi of neither. I WANT AMD to keep up because it's good for me, the consumer.

Consoles are not going to make enough $$$ to keep AMD afloat. AMD will lose out on the PC space and that will cost them 2 to 3 times what they would of made on the PC market. Sony only GDDR5 APU's is what I am talking about. AMD is losing out big time by not having GDDR5 in their APU's. AMD will still have the memory bottleneck and thus they will be unsuitable for me to use their APU's. Also because AMD has not fixed one of their primary problems with APU'S memory bandwidth they will get beat out by Intel in 2014 with Broadwell. The Second AMD is DEATHLY afraid of eating into their Discrete GPU market and that is whats going to cost them DEARLY!!!!

I use fx 8350 and 1090T. I use linux/freeBSD and develop python parallel code for graphics API in llvmpipe for custom work along with 650ti 2gb for GPGPU with opencl...
My colleague got an i7 3770k recently and overclocked it to 5Ghz.
The whole cabinet starts smoking....you can even see a mirage!!...i got him an x60 kraken to cool it. Its much better now. Only the al on the cooler gets hot.

I undervolted my fx 8350 to 1.35v from a stock 1.4 and my 1090t from a whopping 1.475 turbo to 1.35 and overclocked to 3.5 Ghz ...both are air cooled. Sweet!! hardly any heat get released. I even undervolted imc to 1.15! and my cpu never crosses 44 C on load. Air cooled with cnps11x.

I recently started using opencl. I use gimp a lot with opencl enabled.
With python code using opencl the result was jaw dropping offloading stuff to gpu....

I sincerely think Intel only has a monopoly and an x86 superiority(IPC).
    GPGPU will formally kill x86.

Oh by the way is python a good programming language to start in? I don't think the i7-3770K should overclocked that much. You shouldn't need to overclock Intel's chips because they are that much better than AMD's in IPC. AMD does have some cool run POWER HOGGING CHIPS!!!!

I overclocked my fx 8350 to 5 Ghz for a period of 3 weeks, on air cooling.
The intel one only works best liquid coolers. Its not cpu that can withstand that much heat, its just that the power phases in extreme heat can pop, unless further cooled.

I believe everyone undervolts and overclocks AMD cpu's.

For the work i do IPC is absolutely Useless.

Now, if english is a second language, then it is, to an extent, understandable, but you constant use of personal insults in what should be a debate is going to be frowned upon.

If you want to have a reasonable debate, then please give us coherent arguments, otherwise everyone will treat you like the child you are seen as.

    8. No its a first language for me. Read the post I replied to it talks about how screwed AMD is because they don't want to sacrifice their mid and high end GPU's for APU and thus will never be able to compete with Intel.

no, seriously, if you post like this instead of how you posted previously, people will take you seriously.

I was distinctly under the impression that AMDs APUs are pretty much mid end GPUs thrown in with some modified bulldozer/piledriver CPUs and with unified on-chip memory. or going to be in the near future.

    10. You're Welcome. Right now AMD's APU's are low to mid range. If AMD wants to win the IGP race they need to up their IGP game so it equals a current gen mainstream Card if not a bit better.

Because of Intel CPU's have both great power consumption AND Great IPC both of I want and need!!!! AMD is NOT faster than Intel and ties at at best in select benchmarks and tools I'll don't use. I care about gaming, emulation and web browsing and AMD SUCKS at all of those. Higher TDP and power consumption and cheaper for Weaker Processors!!!!

      Delete
    2. Case in point, point proven.
You care about power but not the price of your computer?
Wow, I have $10,000 computer that is powered by wishful thinking. do you want it?

Lemme get this straight - a $200 CPU ties with a $350 CPU in rendering a scene. That's pretty absurd.

I game. There is no bottleneck, no noticeable difference, between my system and the identical (apart from CPU + motherboard socket) system across the hall. (the 3770k one..)

I currently have 1 game, 10 windows and approximately 40,000,000,000 tabs open (well.. 83). None of these application are even a fraction slower than if they were the only thing open.

  41. Kaveri will utilize a 1050 Gflops GPU equivalent to an overclocked 7750 or a 7770 desktop GPU.

This 12 year old's 5570 on the other hand utilizes only a 520 Gflop discrete GPU with older tech. Sad how he compares a desktop GPU to a TABLET APU Temash ... haha... "MY DESKTOP INTEL CRUSHES THAT TABLET PROCESSOR WOOO"

Sad how intel's atom tablet processors are battery hogs and perform ten+ times worse than Temash in any GPU bound test (and even three times worse than apple's ipad).

Intel's new iris GPU utilizes a 830 Gflop GPU. Broadwell is not out until 201vator FX, and Excavator Kaveri succeso5.. in that time AMD will already have its Excar APUs out with 9000 series GN 3.0 Core.

    2. From the 10.8 on the Web Browsing, Intel's laptop went down to 9.5 on 720p video. You are losing 1.3 hours of your time there.

AMD goes from 6.2 to 5.6. You are merely losing .6 hours.

Intel is losing more than double of what AMD is losing. Besides, most of the time users keep the laptop connected or on Sleep Mode, so it becomes irrelevant.

  42. I do not understand in which way is intel cpu better.
They contribute MORE to green house gases than any other foundry..
Intel keeps building infrastructure wasting more resources and waste on this planet just to build a power-effecient cpu. Adding to this............Shockingly the extra heat of intel cpu completely cancels out any power hungry cpu amd manufactures PLUS you need to up the cooling level of an A/C unit !!....especially in commercial environments.

AMD on the other hand uses foundries that is shared by many others and funded by oil companies.

Broadwell in 2015... intel is stuck with sub-par haswell through 2014

Intel with all its billions in research money gets 5% IPC boost per year with absolutely NO improvement in gaming since the 2600k, which is still the best intel overclocker because haswell and ivy are plagued with heating issues.

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2040804/amd-hopes-to-bridge-gap-between-xbox-playstation-and-pcs.html

    Kaveri Will have GDDR5.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. huma does NOT mean GDDR5 it just means that the GPU and CPU memory can be accessed by both. Besides unless they say GDDR5 there is no way to believe it.

      Delete
    2. That`s the whole point of HUMA with GDDR5, use the same Memory by both CPU/GPU without having to reroute Data a few times, which should massively improve performance and save tons of resources, which translates in faster applications.

Even though i am not interested in AMD APUs at all, HUMA is a big deal, whether they use DDR3/4 or GDDR5 is quite irrelevant.

HSA and HUMA are infact a big Deal for Games and Applications, even if they do not include GDDR5 in Kaveri (I am pretty sure they will) they can however introduce it on a later chip, as long as HSA and HUMA are introduced in Steamroller FX the rest is not as important, sure faster Memory is always good, but that can wait as long as we get both HSA/HUMA first.

I am more a gamer than anything so i rather have Steamroller first than Kaveri, Power Savings and APUs are pretty much irrelevant for me and the high performance users, since APUs are only able to run New Games on low quality, but APUs are great and inexpensive for people on a budget or with a laptop on light gaming and power savings.

AMD just saved their ass by Buying ATi, sure it was rather over valued, but thanks to Radeon GPUs and APUs AMD will be around for at least the next decade.

Even though i am not interested in APUs, they are selling like Hot Pancakes and the Radeon HD7000 Series for the first time has beaten nVidia in Performance crown, Cooling and GPGPU/OpenCL benchmarks, maybe not in Power Usage... nVidia is a few Watts lower than AMD but difference is about 5-10 watts. Also the Never Settle Bundle is also selling tons of Radeon cards quite well.

GPGPU is a big deal too and will soon most applications will be heavily using it with HSA/HUMA, making IPC or Single Threaded performance in the next 2 years not as relevant as it is now, we have been witness how AMD FX CPUs beating most i5/i7 CPUs in games like Crysis3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and Grid2 in higher resolutions, in lower resolutions Intel has a MASSIVE lead over AMD, but seriously... who plays at anything less than 1920x1200 or 1080p now a days? in worst case scenario for AMD CPUs in non AMD Optimized applications i seen AMD get beaten in the highest res/setting for about 5-10 FPS... seriously, check any benchmark on non AMD optimized titles and see how much of FPS Intel has over AMD at the highest settings and resolutions.

We already seen tons of apps making use of GPGPU like Winzip, Handbrake, Photoshop and other well known apps, AMD also holds a Lead on GPGPU.

I do not see AMD dying in the near future but i do see Intel struggling not in performance... but for support of AMD HSA/HUMA, seems the whole market and developers are heading that way, the good thing is that AMD will never cripple Intel or nVidia like they do to AMD, but they will just be as good as AMD Hardware.

I personally own 3 machines, i got an Alienware Laptop with in a i5 and GTX560, an old Core2Quad with a GTX260 and my current main Gaming PC with an FX-8350 and GTX470, i mainly use Intel/nVidia combo, but also used complete AMD hardware before, my opinions are not biased and i am willing to use Intel/AMD/nVidia hardware as long as they release good and fast hardware, AMD has been lacking massively on CPU and Intel i7 4770 is not a worthy upgrade for any one with an i7 2600k and higher, seems Intel is slowing down in their performance and AMD seems to be promising from 15-30% and even 40% improvements each new generation, in the next 1-2 years they should be on par in both iGPU and CPU hardware.

I like this jml12 much more than the jml12 that only keeps posting anti AMD rants with a massive all over the Internet like:

      "AMD DIE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

At least you can debate with this jml, you should refrain your little brother from making comments on your accounts, it´s giving a horrible reputation to you in most Tech sites.

      Delete
    3. Intel has OpenCL and they are working on GPU compute. Intel however has been slowing down on CPU performance and AMD will catch up. I am only using a lowly Sandy Bridge 35 watt dual core cpu so I need to upgrade. I don't use most of those GPGPU apps so right now GPGPU isn't useful for me as I just play games and use console emulators. Pcsx2 is starting to use 4 cores and dolphin uses only 2 cores right now. Which means IPC is still very important to me. AMD is better at compute but Nvidia chose FPS and lower power usage. My old Radeon 5570 needs an upgrade big time but what to upgrade to? Thanks, its fun to debate.

She is one of the top executive people at AMD, i would not doubt her words.

I think Kaveri will be released first on FM2 but will not be able to use HUMA, only after they release FM2+ Boards will GDDR5 be availabe, even if does not include GDDR5 Kaveri is not important for most of us AMD users, since most are expecting Steamroller high performance CPUs and the APUs at the moment are not even medium range.

I really don`t care for Kaveri one way or the other.

    14. Dude, the Kabini core is made to compete with the Pentium/Celeron/Atom from Ivy Bridge, not Haswell.

On the GPU and CPU side, they are one generation behind Intel and Nvidia, but that is how they want it to be. Besides, you are comparing a 22nm(Intel) vs a 28nm(AMD), AMD is performing quite well for that architecture and imagine if they both were the same nanometer.

      http://www.anandtech.com/show/6981/the-kabini-deal-can-amd-improve-the-quality-of-mainstream-pcs-with-its-latest-apu/2

      http://www.anandtech.com/show/6981/the-kabini-deal-can-amd-improve-the-quality-of-mainstream-pcs-with-its-latest-apu/3

Sure the CPu still favors Intel, but look at the gap, it is not that tiny anymore, AMD is closing in.
On the GPU side, it is superior and it is lower in watts.

Make sense on what you see/hear, don't assume things too quick. AMD might equal or surpass Intel on the same architecture(22nm) and be cooler along with less wattage.

      Delete
    15. Most of the time they keep talking about Intel's Atom being the competition and that is the Ivy Bridge version. They didn't make the processors to compete with what's coming, they don't know how Haswell is going to be on the low-ends. They are merely competing with what they know, thus the Ivy Bridge.
The HD 7000 was made to compete with the GTX 500 from Nvidia, so the 600 winning is not a surprise. What did surprised me what how the HD 7000 started surpassing the GTX 600 series, that was a breakthrough for AMD. Keep in mind that the main purpose of the HD 8000 is to compete with the GTX 600 series, even if people keep talking about it competing with the GTX 700.

Point is, don't compare the latest from Intel or Nvidia with the latest from AMD.

      Delete
    16. Most of the Time AMD kabini has low power usage they didn't track how much power Kabini uses during Gaming. Intel Haswell 15 watt with HD 5000 can and will crush AMD kabini to the ground. AMD Kabini still has a long way to go in power usage for their lackluster performance but AMD did good this time but not good enough for me to consider them over Intel's HD 5000 which is easily 2 as fast. Only AMD fanbois would tell not to compare AMD's latest with Intel's and Nvidia's latest. I compare apples to apples and that means I compare the latest and greatest out there from AMD, Nvidia and Intel and so far AMD is fighting a losing battle if you fanboi have to tell me not to compare AMD's latest with Intel's latest. No You're Wrong AMD still isn't anywhere close to matching Intel's IPC. AMD has a 40% gap in IPC to cover in order to catch up to Intel and then AMD needs to catch up to Iris otherwise ITS OVER FOR AMD!!!! AMD kabini uses a lot less power than Brazos and it doesn't suck but its a long way from earning my approval.

  52. It is one thing to appreciate power consumption , it is another thing to banter about 100 extra Watts of power... Compare that to fying something on the stove, or cooking something in the oven... IT has been proven over and over again that the actual power difference equates to 15-20 dollars a year difference a year. SO is it price to performance you are worried about after all? Or just a blind idealization of the supreme factor of power consumption in itself, no other external factors included?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 100 extra watts is a lot for PC to use. Besides I don't need 8 cores so AMD is less that USELESS to me. AMD's IPC is half of what Intel's is right now and Intel uses half the power if not more. Sure in mobile Intel might be lacking but now Intel eat, sleeps, and breathes mobile and you desktop gamers don't like that because Intel doesn't care about performance because they are so far ahead of AMD that they don't need to do anything there.
